SELECTION PROCESS & METHODOLOGY.

The plant of the year selection panel was chosen by Home Garden Panel. Members are reflective of everyday Americans; they live across the country and are from a variety of backgrounds, but they all share a passion for gardening. Plants are distributed to panel members after they are selected by different breeders and  grow in a protected greenhouse environment. Over the course of two months, they were to be fed, watered, and cared for; after that time, the panel voted for their favorite plant out of the ten they tried out.

OUT OF MANY, ONE.

2014's Plant of the Year is the Zinnia Profusion Double Hot Cherry, which was selected from ten plant varieties by a panel of consumers. These consumers grew and cared for those ten plants, taking pictures and noting their experiences with them. After the growing season ended, the panel voted on their favorite variety that they cared for, ultimately selecting the Zinnia Profusion Double Hot Cherry as the overall winner—our Plant of the Year for 2014.

RECOMMENDED BY PEERS.

Panel members were more apt to select plants that their peers, friends, or family recommended, sticking with researched trends. Word of mouth is the most often used method of information gathering and dissemination when dealing with gardening. Gardening is inherently a social process for many, often qualifying as a family activity. The selecting panel reinforced that people are drawn to what their family, friends, and peers recommend and share about caring for their plants.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS.

The Zinnia Profusion Double Hot Cherry is simple to care for and blooms for much of the summer and into the fall, bringing natural beauty wherever it goes. Planting it somewhere with adequate sun—it likes partial to full sunlight—will help it perform best. This flower isn't demanding with its liquid diet—only water it as needed. If you're purchasing more than one of these plants and are planting them together, make sure to leave 15-18 inches between them; they'll grow to between 12 and 18 inches and will need the spacing. There's a reason why consumers selected the Zinnia Profusion Double Hot Cherry as the 2014 Plant of the Year—it's colorful, blooms for a long time, performs extremely well, and is low maintenance, making this flower a winner indeed.
